AUTHORITIES of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, have confirmed three persons dead as a result of armed robbery attacks on five banks at the permanent campus of the institution on Thursday.
It is recalled that the robbers numbering about 20 on Thursday morning, raided First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Intercontinental Bank, Skye Bank, Oceanic Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank and carted away undisclosed amounts of money.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sam Oyeleye, said that the school management had received news of the death of three persons from the hospital where they were receiving treatment.
Oyeleye said that two of the deceased died as a result of bullet wounds while the last person died of shock.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Odubela, was in the institution on Friday for an on-the-spot assessment and described the incident as pathetic and unfortunate.
According to Mr. Sam Oyeleye, the commissioner, while speaking to journalists at the end of the visit, expressed deep sympathy over the incident, saying “government would certainly do something about it”. The commissioner pointed out that the robbery occurrence was a reflection of the general security situation in the country with assurance that the state government would do what was required to forestall a re-occurrence.
He condoled with the families of those who lost their lives to the robbery attack and prayed God to grant them “the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
In his reaction, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wale Are Olaitan, said the incident was “not as a result of the security breach on campus” adding that “the attack was against the banks that were patronised by the host communities of the university and not directed at the students whose interest and safety remained guarded and protected by the University.”
Professor Olaitan therefore assured parents and guardians that the University would continue to strengthen security by further embarking on effective security networking with relevant agencies.
