The latest killing brought to 11 the number of persons killed by suspected cultists, allegedly involved in a supremacy tussle within the past six days.
However, a source informed Saturday Tribune, on Friday, that the renewed hostilities among the warring cult groups might be due to the infiltration of their leadership by some desperate politicians scheming for positions.
Further checks indicated that the alleged release of some undisclosed sums of cash to some cult groups, ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries scheduled for November 19, by some politicians, whose identities could not be immediately ascertained might have sparked off the recent violence.
Around 12.30 pm, on Friday, sporadic shootings continued at Amarata, Imgbi road and OMPADEC Street, which leads to a popular r oad, in Yenagoa.
Fear gripped pedestrians, commuters and shop owners as they ran in different directions, when the reverberating sounds of gunshots rent the air, leading to commotion on the ever-busy Imgbi Road.
Some parents had to rush to their children’s school, following the incident to fetch their wards.
Confirming the latest killings at Erepa in Yenagoa on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Baylesa State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eguaveon Emopkae stated that “We have made some arrests over the killings at Erepa and right now, I cannot give details on what led to the incident, because we are still investigating the matter.”
On the five people that were shot dead on Wednesday night around 8.15 pm at Azikoro and Ekeki areas, he said three suspects had been apprehended, assuring that “we are on top of the situation and we would work round the clock to ensure peace and tranquillity in Bayelsa, most especially with beehive in political activities”.
Emopkae advised the people to go about their normal business, stressing that concerted efforts by the authorities were on to maintain law and order.
